A class of drugs with psychoactive effects that have a benzene ring and a diazepine ring in combination.  Their effect is through enhancing the effect of GABA.

Some examples would include (listed by generic name/brand name):  Alprazolam/Xanax,  Chlordiazepoxide, Clonazepam/Klonopin, Clorazepate/Tranxene, Diazepam/Valium, Estazolam/Prosom, Lorazepam/Ativan, Midazolam/Versed, Oxazepam/Serax, Quazepam/Dora, Temazepam/Restoril

They are used as anxiolytics, hypnotic, anti-seizure and muscle relaxant drugs.
