Located in the central, lower (base) part of the brain these nuclei of neurons perform connecting and coordinating functions that allow different areas of the brain to work together. Their functions are not fully understood. They include movement coordination; decision-making; processing emotions, motivations, and habits; and participating in reward and addiction. The ganglia include Caudate nucleus, Globus pallidus, Putamen, Substantia nigra, subthalamic nucleus and the Ventral pallidum.
