Neuromelanin

A dark pigment produced in a specific group of neurons in the human brain.  A little understood polymer that appears to have active functions in those brain cells.  It absorbs toxic agents, functions as an antioxidant and participates in intracellular iron metabolism. It is highly concentrated in the basal ganglia Substantia Nigra.
