In sleep medicine it is a general term used to describe the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea by breathing air at an increased pressure. The pressure can be constant (Constant Positive Airway Pressure – CPAP), at two levels of pressure (inspiratory/expiratory – Bi-level – Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure) or variable to assist breathing in more complicated conditions.
