A group of chemicals that play an important role in the body’s response to stress and as neurotransmitters in the central and peripheral nervous system.  They are produced in the medulla portion of the adrenal gland and in nerve cells.   When released from the adrenal or the sympathetic nervous system the body’s stress response system is activated.

They are monoamines based on catechol and include epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
